We're Off!

At my retirement dinner in late April, I told you about my plans for my "retirement trip."  Well, those plans have become a reality.

I left Windsor on August 29th, taking Via to Toronto where I met my friend from the UK at Pearson Airport.  We then headed back downtown, which was a challenge because of the construction, but we did ultimately make it to the Fairmont Royal York Hotel -- really handy for our Saturday departure aboard The Canadian.

The Canadian doesn't leave Toronto until around 10 pm, and we had been given our instructions prior to that.  Suitcases were to be checked through to Jasper, and only a small carry on was to be taken on board.  Even "Sleeper Plus" accommodation has very little storage space!

With a full day before us, we walked down to Queen's Quay and wandered the harbour front.  We had a wonderful day, then went for dinner, and then headed to the lounge to await further instructions AND our departure.

The 10 pm departure meant that our first encounter with our cabin was in its "nighttime mode" meaning that our day time chairs were folded down and two beds were made up -- bunks!  There was a little floor space -- but it was best if one stayed seated on a bunk while the other was attempting to move around.  Giggles all round!

But before we called it a day, we were all invited for a welcome reception and "champagne" and hors d'oeuvres.   This was also our first opportunity to meet those who would be travelling with us for a few days.  Some would leave the train before us, and others would continue on until Vancouver.  It was a nice touch, and a lovely end to our crazy day.

Then to our cabin and our first night of being rocked to sleep, and of waking to wonder why we were stationary ... or where we were ... if we were capable of coherent thought.
